Maybe you have and if you have, this may be a good opportunity to be clear again on your intent.

I still remember when I first started my business. It was all about the freedom of doing things without having to take instructions from someone else and its about financial freedom. The very first business my husband and I started took off really well. In 3 months, we made $500,000 and we didn’t even have an office. We worked out of our bedroom!

Our business continue to grow and within the year, we ventured into multiple businesses; an e-commerce website selling teddy bears, a website design software, telecommunications, and a web development and corporate media company.

We were writing for newspaper columns, I was featured on TV and magazines and newspapers.

Things were looking great and then, we decided to take on this $1.5 million project.

We felt somewhat uneasy about this business especially it was related to some form of online gambling.

The company wanted to partner with us to create an online version of fantasy football (if you don’t know what it is, please google fantasy football, and you will be as surprised as I was how popular it is) and then after grow into a platform where people could call in to decide and bet on any sports that was happening.

The business was going to be called Hookonsports.com. This company that approached us run premium rate phone line business.

However, despite feeling uneasy and uncomfortable and even remembering one of our partners told us, we are going to bed with an enemy (we discovered the owner of that company is only focused on profit and seem to do business with no integrity), we went ahead.

And yes, you guessed it right. In short 6 months, not only we didn’t get paid for the work we did for her company, we hired employees and rented a premium office space and ended up with a huge overhead cost.

We kept paying all the expenses and despite all other sales we were getting, we starting borrowing money to maintain the office and the number of employees.

And in the next 1.5 years, we lost everything and ended up with $500,000 debt (both with loans from family and credit card).

Why am I sharing this story with you? Because our intention for starting the business was never clear to us. It was about getting away from my previous job, it was about making money.

There is nothing wrong with making money, however, if it is the factor for working at your current job or starting a business, whenever you are faced with challenges or obstacles, it wont take you far. And moreover, you won’t be happy because you are doing something that is not meaningful to you. You are not doing something that you enjoy and love.

So be clear, clarity leads to power.

Write down what is your intention for your business or you in your current job.

What problems are you solving for your customers and the world? Does it motivate you to get up in the morning and without hesitance, work on it?

Once you have clarity, then you can decide whether it is the “right” business or job for you.

And if it isn’t, you now know what you like and with that, you can begin to search and find what gives you meaning and joy.
